Earlier this year, a Brisbane-based service business came to us frustrated. They were spending money on Google Ads, getting decent traffic, but the leads just weren’t coming through the way they expected. Their conversion rate was low, their bounce rate was high, and nobody could quite figure out why.
We ran a Google PageSpeed audit on their site within the first ten minutes of our initial call.
It scored 41 out of 100 on mobile.
For context: Google considers anything below 50 “poor.” A score of 41 means your site is actively working against you — pushing you down search rankings, driving visitors away before your page even loads, and telling every potential customer who does land on your site that you’re not worth their time.
Within five days, we had that score sitting at 94. Within 30 days, their monthly lead volume had tripled.
Here’s exactly what we found, what we did, and what changed.
Why Website Speed Is a Lead Generation Problem, Not Just a Technical One
Before we get into the specifics, it’s worth understanding why a slow website doesn’t just feel bad — it directly kills your business results.
Google uses speed as a ranking factor. Since the 2021 Core Web Vitals update, Google has factored page loading speed into search rankings. A slow site doesn’t just frustrate visitors — it actively gets deprioritised in search results, meaning fewer people even find you in the first place.
Visitors don’t wait. Research consistently shows that 53% of mobile users will leave a website if it takes more than 3 seconds to load. For every additional second of load time, conversion rates drop by roughly 4.5%. Our client’s site was loading in 6.2 seconds on mobile. You do the maths.
For service businesses, first impressions are everything. If someone in Brisbane searches for your service, clicks your ad or listing, and then waits six seconds for your page to load — they’ve already decided something about your business. They’re probably clicking back to Google and calling someone else.

What We Found in the Audit
When we ran a full technical audit on the client’s site, the issues were significant — but they were also entirely fixable. This wasn’t a case of needing to rebuild from scratch. It was a case of a site that had been built without performance in mind, and had never been properly optimised after launch.
Here’s what we found:
Uncompressed, oversized images. The homepage alone had eleven images uploaded at full resolution from a camera or phone — 4–6 MB files being loaded on a mobile screen. Image weight was the single biggest contributor to slow load times.
No browser caching. The site wasn’t configured to store any resources in a visitor’s browser, meaning every page visit — including repeat visits from the same person — loaded all assets from scratch every time.
Render-blocking scripts. Several JavaScript and CSS files were loading before the page content, meaning the browser had to wait for those files to finish before it could show the visitor anything. The page appeared blank for seconds at a time.
An oversized, poorly coded theme. The WordPress theme was loaded with features the site never used — page builders, WooCommerce dependencies, custom font libraries — all running in the background on every page load.
No content delivery network (CDN). All assets were being served from a single hosting server. Visitors on mobile networks or further from the server experienced significantly longer load times.
Slow shared hosting. Server response times alone were adding over a second to every page load.
Combined, these issues were adding roughly 4.4 seconds to the site’s load time. Most visitors never made it past that.
What We Did — Day by Day
We work methodically, testing after each change so we know exactly what’s moving the needle. Here’s how the week played out.
Day 1 — Image Optimisation and Compression
We started with the highest-impact fix first. Every image was compressed, converted to WebP format, and resized to the maximum dimensions they’d actually display at. Images that had been 4–6 MB came down to 80–120 KB without any visible quality loss.
We also implemented lazy loading — images below the fold don’t load until the user scrolls toward them, so the initial page load only carries what the visitor actually sees first.

Day 2 — Caching and CDN Setup
We configured browser caching so static assets — images, fonts, CSS — cache for 30 days in the visitor’s browser. We also connected the site to Cloudflare’s CDN, distributing assets across global servers. For a Brisbane business, this meant assets served from Sydney and Melbourne edge servers rather than a single shared host.

Day 3 — Script Cleanup and Render-Blocking Fixes
We audited every JavaScript and CSS file loading on the site. Render-blocking scripts were deferred — loading after visible content rather than before it. Several scripts from unused plugins were removed entirely. We also minified remaining CSS and JavaScript files, reducing their size by 20–40%.

Day 4 — Hosting Migration
The shared hosting environment had a ceiling we couldn’t push past through optimisation alone. Server response times were sitting at 780ms. Google recommends under 200ms.
We migrated the site to a managed WordPress VPS with guaranteed resource allocation. Server response time dropped to 140ms within an hour.

Day 5 — Core Web Vitals Fine-Tuning
The final day was about pushing from good to excellent. We focused on Google’s three Core Web Vitals ranking metrics:
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): The time for the biggest visible element to load. We preloaded the hero image and above-the-fold fonts, dropping LCP from 4.1s to 1.4s.
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): How much the page jumps as it loads. We set explicit dimensions on all images and embeds to eliminate layout shift.
First Input Delay (FID): How quickly the page responds to the first user interaction. Resolved by the script cleanup on Day 3.
Final PageSpeed Score: 94 out of 100 Final load time: 1.8 seconds
The Results — 30 Days Later
The goal was never a high score on a speed tool — it was more leads. Here’s what the 30 days before versus the 30 days after looked like:
