Ask them when they last updated it, responded to a review, posted a photo, or checked what keywords it was ranking for — and you’ll get a very different answer.
For the overwhelming majority of Queensland businesses, their Google Business Profile is sitting there doing the bare minimum — showing a name, an address, and a phone number — when it could be their single most powerful source of free, high-intent leads.

What Your Google Business Profile Actually Controls
Before we get into optimisation, it’s worth understanding just how much territory your GBP covers — because most business owners significantly underestimate it.
Your Google Business Profile is the engine behind three of the most valuable pieces of real estate on Google:
The local map pack. When someone in Brisbane searches for “plumber near me,” “digital marketing agency Brisbane,” or “café Fortitude Valley,” the three businesses that appear in the map block at the top of the results page are there because of their GBP, not their website. Getting into that map pack — and staying there — is entirely driven by how well your profile is optimised and how active it is.
Google Maps listings. When someone opens Google Maps and searches for your category, your GBP controls everything they see — your photos, your hours, your reviews, your description, your services. A thin or outdated profile loses business to competitors with complete, active ones every single day.
The knowledge panel. When someone searches your business name directly, the large panel that appears on the right side of the results page is your GBP. This is the first thing a warm lead sees when they’re about to call you — and if it shows old hours, no photos, and three reviews from 2021, it plants doubt right at the moment they were about to convert.
Across all three of these placements, your GBP is doing enormous work — or failing to do it — completely independently of your website.
Why Most Brisbane Business GBPs Are Underperforming
In our experience auditing GBPs for Queensland businesses, the same problems come up again and again. None of them are complicated to fix. All of them are costing real money.
The profile was set up and never touched. Google’s algorithm actively rewards profiles that show signs of ongoing activity — regular posts, new photos, recent reviews with responses. A profile that hasn’t been updated in twelve months is being quietly deprioritised in favour of competitors who are showing up every week.
The business description is generic or missing. Most businesses either leave this blank or write something like “We are a professional company offering quality services.” Google uses the text in your description as a relevance signal for local search. A description that includes your services, your suburb, and the surrounding areas you service is significantly more likely to surface for the right searches.
There are no posts. Google Business Profile has a posts feature — essentially a mini social feed that appears directly on your listing. Businesses that post regularly signal to Google that they’re active, relevant, and worth showing. Businesses that don’t post at all are leaving this signal entirely on the table.
Photos are outdated, low quality, or missing entirely. Photos are one of the first things potential customers look at on a GBP, and Google’s algorithm gives weight to profiles with a healthy, regularly updated photo library. We regularly see profiles for established Brisbane businesses with three photos uploaded in 2019. Meanwhile their competitor down the road has forty recent photos of their team, their work, and their premises — and they’re ranking above them as a result.
Reviews aren’t being responded to. Google factors review response rate and recency into local ranking signals. A business with 40 reviews and responses to all of them consistently outranks a business with 40 reviews and no responses. Beyond the algorithm, responding to reviews — especially negative ones — is one of the most powerful trust signals a potential customer can see.
Service areas and categories are incomplete. Many businesses only select one or two categories when Google allows multiple, and don’t fully complete their service area settings. This directly limits which searches your profile appears for.
What a Fully Optimised GBP Looks Like
Here’s what we build out for clients when we optimise a Google Business Profile from scratch — and what you should be aiming for.
Complete business information. Every single field filled in. Business name, address, phone number, website, hours including public holidays, business description with local keywords, all relevant service categories selected, service areas specified down to suburb level.
A rich photo library. A minimum of 20–30 photos covering your team, your premises, your work in progress, completed jobs, and your logo and cover image. Photos should be updated regularly — at least monthly — with new images of recent work.
Active weekly posting. At least one GBP post per week. These can be short — a photo of a recent job, a tip relevant to your industry, a promotion, a behind-the-scenes moment. The content matters less than the consistency. You’re signalling to Google that this profile is alive and active.
A consistent review generation strategy. A systematic approach to asking every satisfied customer for a Google review — whether that’s a follow-up text message, an email, a QR code on an invoice, or a direct ask at the end of a job. The businesses ranking at the top of local map packs in competitive Brisbane categories typically have 80 to 200+ reviews. You don’t get there by accident.
Prompt, professional review responses. Every review responded to within 48 hours. Positive reviews get a genuine, personalised thank you. Negative reviews get a calm, professional response that acknowledges the concern and invites the conversation offline. This is one of the most visible trust signals on your entire online presence.
Q&A management. The Questions & Answers section on your GBP can be populated by anyone — including you. Proactively adding and answering common questions about your business (pricing, availability, service area, what to expect) reduces friction for potential customers and adds more keyword-rich content to your profile.
Product and services listings. If you offer specific services or products, listing them individually within your GBP adds detail that helps Google match your profile to more specific searches — and gives potential customers a clearer picture of what you do before they even click through.
The Results We See When GBPs Are Done Properly
The impact of a properly optimised and actively maintained GBP is consistently one of the most dramatic improvements we see for Queensland clients — and it’s one of the fastest.
For a Brisbane trades business we worked with last year, GBP optimisation was the first thing we tackled. Within eight weeks of completing the optimisation and establishing a consistent posting and review generation routine, they had moved from outside the local map pack entirely to sitting in position two for their primary search term in their suburb. Monthly calls directly from the GBP went from four to twenty-seven.
For a Sunshine Coast service business, going from eleven reviews to sixty-four reviews over four months — with every review responded to — pushed them into the map pack for eleven new local search terms they hadn’t been appearing for at all. How to Check How Your GBP Is Actually Performing
If you want a quick sense of where your profile stands right now, here’s what to look at:
Search your business name on Google and look at your knowledge panel. Is every field complete? Are your photos current? When was your last post? How many reviews do you have, and when was the most recent one?
Then search your main service plus your suburb — “electrician Paddington Brisbane,” “bookkeeper Maroochydore,” whatever your equivalent is. Are you appearing in the map pack? If not, your competitors are getting calls that should be going to you.
Finally, log into your Google Business Profile dashboard and check your insights. How many people searched for you directly versus discovering you through a category search? How many clicked to call versus clicking through to your website? These numbers will tell you quickly how much work your profile is — or isn’t — doing.
The Bottom Line
Your Google Business Profile is free. It’s already there. And for most Brisbane and Queensland businesses, it’s doing a fraction of what it’s capable of.
